5 Tips for Preventing Fire Ants in Your Yard This Summer
By Bobby Clanton · June 15, 2025
Summer in Whajimminy means sunshine, barbecues, and unfortunately — fire ants. These aggressive little critters can turn a fun afternoon in the yard into a painful ordeal. Here are five tips from our team at Bobby's Bug Hunters to help you keep fire ants under control this season.
1. Keep Your Yard Trimmed and Tidy
Fire ants love overgrown grass and yard debris. Mow regularly, rake up leaf litter, and remove piles of wood or brush from your property. A well-maintained yard is less attractive to ants looking for a place to build their mounds.
2. Apply Broadcast Bait in Late Spring
The best time to treat your yard is before fire ant colonies really get going. We recommend applying a broadcast granular bait across your entire yard in late April or early May. This gives the bait time to work its way through the colony before peak summer activity.
3. Treat Individual Mounds Directly
If you spot mounds popping up, don't just kick them over — treat them. Drench treatments or mound-specific baits are effective at eliminating individual colonies. Just be sure to apply the product according to the label directions.
4. Create a Barrier Around Your Home's Foundation
A perimeter treatment around the foundation of your house can prevent fire ants from foraging indoors. We use a combination of liquid barrier treatments and granular products to create a protective zone that lasts for months.
5. Call in the Professionals
If you're seeing multiple mounds across your property, or if fire ants keep coming back despite your best efforts, it may be time to call in the pros. At Bobby's Bug Hunters, we offer targeted fire ant programs that include an initial treatment and quarterly follow-ups to keep your yard ant-free all year long.
